Sonam Kapoor, a fashion icon known for her stunning style, has recently opened up about her struggles with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and the trolling she faced as a teenager. While many admire her confidence today, Sonam shared that she wasn’t always this sure of her appearance.
Speaking at Barkha Dutt’s We The Women summit, Sonam revealed that PCOS affected her physically during her teenage years. “I had something called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). And because of that, I had multiple hormonal issues,” she explained. “I put on weight when I turned 16, which is the time when you’re supposed to be at your prettiest. I had facial hair, and I broke out in acne.” Sonam shared that she was often the target of rude comments and trolling, with people even saying things like, “Oh, she’s Anil Kapoor’s daughter.” These comments deeply affected her, and she admitted that the experience traumatized her at the time.
However, Sonam’s perspective changed over time. She recalled how her mother showed her pictures of actress Kajol, who confidently embraced her unibrow. “My mom showed me Kajol’s picture and said, ‘Look at her! She is the biggest heroine right now.’ I remember feeling motivated after that,” said Sonam.
Sonam also shared how her journey in the film industry began when she was 17. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali discovered her, and she worked as an assistant director on his film Black (2005). She then made her acting debut with Saawariya in 2007.
Today, Sonam is not just known for her acting but also for being a loving wife to businessman Anand Ahuja, whom she married in May 2018. In 2022, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy. Sonam has taken a break from acting, living part-time in London and India. Her most recent film appearance was in the 2023 thriller Blind, where she played a visually impaired investigator.
Despite her early struggles, Sonam’s journey is a story of growth and confidence, inspiring many along the way.
