Filmmaker Kiran Rao recently shared how her parents reacted when she decided to marry Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan. In an interview, she spoke about her personal and professional journey, her family, and how she has maintained her individuality despite being married to a famous actor.
Parents’ Reaction to Her Marriage
Kiran Rao admitted that her parents were shocked when she told them she wanted to marry Aamir Khan.
“It was a shocker for them,” she said. “They were taken aback because they saw a lot of promise in me. They were worried that I might be overshadowed by Aamir’s larger-than-life personality.”
Aamir Khan is one of India’s biggest stars, and his fame can be overwhelming. Kiran, who has always been independent, felt the pressure. But she found comfort in Aamir’s support.

One of the things Kiran appreciated most about Aamir was his acceptance of her as an individual.
“Aamir never expected me to be a certain way. He has always been happy for me to be myself, and that is one of the greatest things about him,” she said.
Family Bonds and Relationships
Kiran also talked about their blended family. She has always shared a close bond with Aamir’s children from his first marriage, Junaid and Ira Khan. She believes this connection is natural because of the warmth Aamir fosters in his family.
“His family is incredibly warm, and relationships grow organically,” she explained. “His friends, who have known him since childhood, become family, and those relationships remain strong.”
She also mentioned that Ira’s husband, Nupur Shikhare, has become a part of their extended family.
Challenges of Being Married to a Superstar
Kiran Rao admitted that being married to Aamir Khan was not always easy.
“When you marry someone incredibly famous, you do lose a part of your own identity,” she said. “It took me a long time to find my own voice again.”
However, she continued to work on her own projects. She founded her film production company, Kindling Pictures, and produced Lapata Ladies. She also continues to work with Aamir Khan Productions.
“Aamir and I will always be there for each other,” she concluded.
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s Relationship
Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan got married in 2005 and had a son, Azad Rao Khan, in 2011. After 15 years of marriage, they announced their separation in 2021. Despite their divorce, they have remained good friends and continue to co-parent their son.
Their story is a testament to mutual respect, understanding, and support even after parting ways.
