Rohit Sharma will remain India’s captain until the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held from February 19 to March 9, 2025. Sources also reveal that India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, is being discussed as the potential next skipper.

Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Journey: Highs and Lows

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy has been a mix of impressive highs and disappointing lows. Under his leadership, India enjoyed a 10-match winning streak during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, which they hosted. However, India lost to Australia in the final. A major highlight came in 2024 when India claimed redemption by winning the ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados. Rohit also led India to the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2023, although they lost to Australia.

Despite these achievements, the second half of 2024 saw Rohit struggle both as a batter and captain. During the 2024/25 Test season, Rohit scored just 164 runs in 15 innings at an average of 10.93. His form continued to dip during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he managed only 31 runs in three Tests.

As a captain, Rohit faced tough times recently. India suffered their first home Test series whitewash in 12 years, losing 0-3 to New Zealand. This was also their first-ever home Test series whitewash in three or more matches.

Rohit returned to the squad after the birth of his second child during the series against Australia but couldn’t turn things around. India lost six Tests in 2024, including four at home, leading to a decline in Rohit’s captaincy record: 12 wins, nine losses, and three draws.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Leadership Potential

Jasprit Bumrah, who has captained India in three Tests so far, winning one and losing two, is being considered as a future leader. His captaincy debut came during the series against Australia, where he led India to a significant 295-run win in Perth. However, his limited experience as a captain leaves room for discussion.

The ICC Champions Trophy: India’s Next Challenge

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will take place across Pakistan and the UAE under a hybrid model. India will play their matches in the UAE. The eight-team tournament will feature 15 50-over matches, with India kicking off their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai.

Group A includes defending champions Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. Group B features Cricket World Cup 2023 winners Australia, along with Afghanistan, England, and South Africa.

India’s group matches, along with the first semi-final, will be hosted in Dubai. The second semi-final and the final will take place in Lahore, unless India qualifies for the final, in which case it will be moved to Dubai.

Key Fixtures

  • February 19: Pakistan vs. New Zealand (Karachi)
  • February 20: India vs. Bangladesh (Dubai)
  • February 23: India vs. Pakistan (Dubai)
  • March 9: Final in Lahore (or Dubai if India qualifies)

The tournament promises intense rivalries, with the India-Pakistan clash on February 23 being the most anticipated. Fans are excited to see if Rohit can lead India to victory or if Bumrah might soon take charge as India’s captain.
