The Congress party has announced a new scheme called the “Yuva Udaan Yojana” to provide financial assistance to unemployed but educated youth in Delhi. If the party is voted to power in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, eligible individuals will receive ₹8,500 per month for one year.
Sachin Pilot Explains the Scheme
Announcing the scheme, Congress leader and former Rajasthan deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot clarified that the assistance is not a handout for those staying idle. He said, “This is not a scheme where people will get money while sitting at home. Beneficiaries must demonstrate their skills by working in companies, factories, or organizations. The financial aid will be distributed through these employers.”
Pilot also emphasized the scheme’s focus on skill development. “We will ensure that people are absorbed in fields where they have received training. This will help them improve their skills and grow professionally,” he added.
Congress’ Other Promises for Delhi
The “Yuva Udaan Yojana” is the latest in a series of promises made by Congress ahead of the Delhi assembly elections:
- Pyari Didi Yojana: Announced on January 6, it promises ₹2,500 per month to women.
- Jeevan Raksha Yojana: Announced on January 8, it offers free health insurance coverage of up to ₹25 lakh.
The Political Context
Delhi will vote for its 70-member assembly on February 5, with results announced on February 8. Congress has been out of power in the capital since 2013 when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged victorious.
In the last two elections, AAP won 67 and 62 seats in 2015 and 2020, respectively, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came second both times. Congress, however, failed to win a single seat in both elections.
With schemes like the “Yuva Udaan Yojana,” Congress is aiming to make a comeback in Delhi by addressing unemployment and providing financial support to key voter groups.
