Madhuri Dixit, one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars, was not always considered a lucky name in the film industry. In the late 1980s, she was labeled as a “jinxed girl” after delivering several box-office flops. Director Indra Kumar, known for hit films like Dil and Beta, recently opened up about casting Madhuri during her struggling years in an interview with Siddharth Kannan.
The “Jinxed Girl” Label
Indra Kumar shared that when he signed Madhuri for Dil alongside Aamir Khan, both actors were not big names at the time. Aamir had one hit (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak), but Madhuri had no successful films. Kumar recalled, “People said, ‘Are you mad? None of her films are working.’ There was even an interview that called her a ‘jinxed girl’ whose movies always flopped. Despite this, I had confidence in her. Something about her made me believe she had potential.”
Madhuri had faced a string of failures since her debut in 1984 with Abodh. Her next seven films, including Awara Baap and Khatron Ke Khiladi, also failed at the box office. However, Kumar decided to cast her not just in Dil but also in Beta.
The Turning Point
Madhuri’s fortunes changed dramatically in 1988 with the release of Tezaab, where her performance as Mohini became a sensation. Indra Kumar recalled, “I started working on Dil in October 1988, and by December, Tezaab was released, followed by Ram Lakhan in January 1989. Suddenly, her image as a ‘flop actress’ changed, and she became a superstar.”
When filming for Dil resumed months later, Madhuri had already risen to stardom. Indra Kumar noted, “She remained down-to-earth on her first day of success, and she still is. There has been no change in her humility.”
Madhuri’s Rise to Fame
Madhuri’s journey to stardom continued with films like Dayavan, Vardi, and Ram Lakhan. She went on to become one of the most successful actresses of her generation, delivering iconic performances in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Dil To Pagal Hai, and Devdas.
Recent Success
Madhuri Dixit’s most recent release, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, starring Kartik Aaryan and Vidya Balan, was a box-office hit. Despite clashing with Singham Again, the film earned ₹389 crore worldwide, proving her lasting appeal in Bollywood.
From being called “jinxed” to becoming a beloved superstar, Madhuri Dixit’s journey is a true testament to talent, resilience, and believing in oneself.
