Janhvi Kapoor made her big debut at the Cannes Film Festival, but the moment felt incomplete for her. The young actor admitted that coming to Cannes without her late mother, Sridevi, feels strange and emotional.
“This place was my mom’s favourite for holidays,” Janhvi shared in a video posted by Vogue India. “We spent 3-4 summers here together. It was a big deal for our family.”
A Place Full of Memories
Janhvi looked back on the special times she shared with her mother in Cannes. Sridevi, a legendary Bollywood actress, often brought her family here to celebrate big life moments.
“Whether mom was getting an award, or dad was shooting, or her film English Vinglish premiered… we were always together,” Janhvi said. “Being back in Cannes with my dad and sister Khushi feels strange. I miss her a lot.”
A Tribute to Sridevi on the Red Carpet
To honour her mother, Janhvi wore a rose-colored outfit with a veil, designed by Indian designer Tarun Tahiliani, during her red carpet debut on May 20. She completed her look with elegant pearl jewelry and a simple low bun, reminding many fans of Sridevi’s timeless grace.
Why Janhvi is at Cannes
Janhvi is attending the festival with the team of the film Homebound, which stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, and is directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. The film was shown in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. Legendary director Martin Scorsese is the executive producer of the movie.
Homebound tells the story of two friends from a small village in North India whose friendship changes when they become police officers.
A Moment of Pride and Emotion
Though it’s a proud moment for Janhvi to represent India at such a global event, the memories of Sridevi make it bittersweet.
“She always brought me along for her big moments,” Janhvi said. “Now I’m here for mine, and I wish she was too.”
This emotional moment at Cannes is not just about fashion and film—it’s a daughter remembering her mother in a place full of love and memories.
