Ayan Mukerji’s 2013 romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, has returned to cinemas and brought a wave of excitement for the New Year. Re-released on Friday, the film made ₹1.20 crore on its opening day, according to Sacnilk.

The movie, known for its heartwarming story about friendship, love, and adventure, sold 65,000 tickets on the first day of its re-release. This added ₹1.20 crore to its overall collection, taking its total domestic gross to ₹188.57 crore and worldwide gross to ₹318 crore. With these numbers, YJHD secured the second-best opening for a re-released film in India, just behind Tumbbad (2018), which earned ₹1.50 crore during its re-release.

Beating Other Re-Released Classics

In terms of opening day earnings, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani surpassed other films re-released in the past year. It outperformed Sajid Ali’s Laila Majnu (₹30 lakh), Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun (₹25 lakh), Yash Chopra’s Veer-Zaara (₹20 lakh), and Nikkhil Advani’s Kal Ho Naa Ho (₹12 lakh).

Karan Johar, the producer of YJHD under Dharma Productions, shared a video on Instagram of theatre audiences dancing to the popular song Badtameez Dil. He captioned it, “Converting cinemas into rock concerts! YJHD is back in theatres!”

A Cult Favorite

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani features an ensemble cast, including Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, late Farooq Shaikh, Tanvi Azmi, Kunaal Roy Kapur, and Rana Daggubati. With music by Pritam, the film struck a chord with audiences for its mix of friendship, love, travel, and unforgettable songs.

The movie also marked a special milestone for Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, as it was their first film together after their breakup. They later reunited for Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha in 2015. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, YJHD was the second collaboration between him and Ranbir, following Wake Up Sid (2009) and preceding Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva (2022).

As the re-release draws fans old and new to theatres, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani continues to prove its enduring charm and timeless appeal.
