On Thursday night, India lost one of its most respected leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The former Prime Minister passed away at the age of 92 due to age-related health problems. He is remembered for his deep knowledge of economics and his important role in shaping India’s growth. Leaders from all over the political spectrum, including many from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed their sadness and paid tribute to him.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who became the country’s leader after Manmohan Singh in 2014, called him one of India’s “most distinguished leaders.” PM Modi praised Singh for his rise from humble beginnings to becoming a respected economist and politician. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi said, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist. He served in various government positions, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy.”

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also shared her condolences. She praised Singh for his role in the 1991 budget, which helped liberalize the Indian economy. She wrote on X, “He had served as the Governor of RBI and as Finance Minister of India. He presented the milestone budget of 1991 which liberalized the Indian economy. Respected by all, he was soft-spoken and gentle.”

Other top BJP leaders also paid tribute to the former Prime Minister. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that Singh played a key role in India’s development. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal spoke about his wisdom, humility, and dedication to public service, saying, “A political stalwart, his wisdom, humility, and dedication to public service earned him respect and admiration across the political spectrum.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described Singh’s passing as an “irreparable loss” to Indian politics. He said, “As Finance Minister and Prime Minister, he played an important role in the governance of the country.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed his sadness. He said, “India has lost a great scholar, economist & statesman with the demise of former PM Manmohan Singh.”

Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, also shared his condolences. He described Singh as “cerebral and thoughtful” and admired him as a fellow Sikh. He added, “His contribution during his stint as Finance Minister and stewardship of the nation as the PM will be long remembered by Indians with gratitude and affection.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also praised Singh’s role in strengthening India’s economy and offered his heartfelt condolences to Singh’s family and supporters.

The Indian government has announced a seven-day period of mourning in honor of the former Prime Minister. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast. Dr. Singh’s last rites will be performed on Saturday with full state honors.
