After several delays, Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut Emergency has finally got a new release date. The film, which has faced multiple setbacks, was initially supposed to release in September but was delayed after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withdrew its certification. Now, Kangana has revealed when the film will hit theatres.
New Release Date for Emergency
On Monday morning, Kangana took to social media to announce the new release date for Emergency. She shared a fresh poster of the film, showing her as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, along with other actors like Vishak Nair (playing Sanjay Gandhi), Anupam Kher (as Jai Prakash Narayan), Shreyas Talpade (as Atal Bihari Vajpayee), and Milind Soman (as Sam Manekshaw).
In the caption, Kangana wrote, “17th January 2025 – The epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny. #Emergency – Unveils Only in cinemas on 17.01.2025!” This new release date comes just a week before India’s Republic Day on January 26, a time when many major films are released. However, Sky Force, an action thriller starring Akshay Kumar, has already claimed the Republic Day weekend.
Certification Issues and Controversies
Emergency has faced a number of challenges since its announcement. One major issue was its certification troubles. The film, which focuses on the life of Indira Gandhi and the emergency period she declared in India from 1975 to 1977, faced objections from some Sikh groups. These objections led the CBFC to withdraw the film’s certification, causing its original release date to be postponed.
Kangana expressed her frustration over the delay when the certification issue first arose. She told ANI, “I know how I made this film. I did not get any support from the film industry. It’s made on a huge budget. I, along with Zee and other partners, created Emergency, and now with the release delay, everyone is bearing a huge loss. Delay in release is a loss for all. I think the Censor Board should take the responsibility to release this film at the earliest.”
Co-produced by Zee Studios and Kangana’s own production company, Manikarnika Films, Emergency marks Kangana’s second directorial effort after 2019’s Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, which she co-directed with Krish. The film is a biographical political thriller about one of the most important periods in India’s history — the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi.
Despite the controversies and delays, Kangana is hopeful that the film will reach audiences soon, and the new release date of January 17, 2025, brings a new sense of excitement for fans who have been eagerly waiting to see it on the big screen.
