Here is the step-by-step guide illustration for opening a car bonnet, with labeled visuals for each stage to make it easy to follow along.
Step 1: Park Your Car and Turn It Off
- Park the car on a flat surface.
- Turn off the engine and remove the key.
- Engage the parking brake to prevent the car from moving.
This is important for safety.

Step 2: Find the Bonnet Release Lever
- Look inside the car, usually on the driver’s side, near the bottom left of the dashboard.
- Look for a small lever or button with a bonnet icon on it. In most cars, it will be a picture of an open bonnet.
When you find it, pull or press the lever. This action unlocks the bonnet, and you may hear a small “click” sound.
Step 3: Locate the Bonnet Catch (Outside the Car)
- Go to the front of the car and look between the bonnet and the car’s grille (where the bonnet meets the front of the car).
- You will find a small safety latch or catch. You need to push or lift it to fully release the bonnet.
This safety latch keeps the bonnet from flying open while you’re driving.
Step 4: Lift the Bonnet
- Hold the bonnet from the center or one of the sides.
- Lift it carefully and watch your fingers. Most bonnets are heavy, so be cautious.
Some cars have a support rod that you need to lift and place into a designated hole to keep the bonnet up. Other cars have a hydraulic system that holds the bonnet up automatically.
Step 5: Secure the Bonnet
If your bonnet has a support rod, make sure it’s securely in place before letting go. If it has a hydraulic system, it should stay up on its own once you open it fully.
