Sonakshi Sinha, known for her recent role as the fiery Fareedan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” acknowledged in an interview that she had taken on some problematic roles in “big films” earlier in her career and expressed her refusal to return to being objectified as “ornamental.”
Speaking with Zoom, Sonakshi stated, “You can clearly observe the shift in the types of characters I’ve portrayed, starting from ‘Akira,’ so this isn’t just lip service. I’m staying true to my principles. I don’t believe I could ever revert to being objectified. It’s a progression everyone must make.”
In “Akira” (2016), directed by AR Murugadoss, Sonakshi portrayed a vigilante combating acid attacks and violence against women.
“As an artist, you have a duty. Many people look up to you. I do stand by the fact that I was young and was given the chance to be part of some significant films. No one in their right mind would have declined at that time. So I took them on, but yes, certain aspects felt uncomfortable even then. As you mature, people notice, discuss, and bring it to your attention. It’s criticism, but it’s constructive,” she elaborated.
Sonakshi launched her career with the Salman Khan starrer “Dabangg” (2010) and went on to feature in successes like “Rowdy Rathore” (2012), “Son of Sardaar” (2012), “Dabangg 2” (2012), and “Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty” (2014), also helmed by Murugadoss.
She recently showcased her acting prowess in the crime-thriller series “Dahaad.”
