The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently issued a notice to Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor Khan following a petition filed by a citizen. The petitioner sought the registration of a case against Khan for using the word ‘Bible’ in the title of her pregnancy book, as reported by Bar and Bench.
Khan’s book, titled ‘KAREENA KAPOOR KHAN’S PREGNANCY BIBLE: The ultimate manual for moms-to-be’, was released in August 2021.
Advocate Christopher Anthony, representing the petitioner, claimed in his plea that the title of the book had offended the religious sentiments of Christians.
The notice was issued by single-judge Justice Gurpal Singh Ahluwalia, in response to Anthony’s plea challenging a previous order from an Additional Sessions Court in February 2022, which dismissed his request to initiate a case against Khan.
Apart from Kareena Kapoor Khan, the notice also includes Amazon Online Shopping, Juggernaut Books, and the co-author of the book as respondents.
The petitioner, a resident of Jabalpur, initially filed a complaint with the local police station, alleging that Khan’s use of the word ‘Bible’ in her book title had hurt the sentiments of the Christian community. However, the police declined to register a case. Subsequently, the advocate pursued the matter in court. Despite his efforts, both the magistrate court and the Additional Sessions Court ruled against him, stating that he failed to demonstrate how the use of the word ‘Bible’ caused offense to the Christian community.
